1. Why can't DVD-ROM drives use the updated firmware without the limitation of the regional code settings?
According to the DVD forum and its specification, we can't offer or release any firmware that includes all region codes.

2. How many times can I change the Region Code of the BTC DVD-ROM?
The region code can be changed 5 times before it is permanently locked to a region. These changes are made when inserting a disc that has a different region code to the drive current code.

3. How to change the Region code of the BTC DVD-ROM?
Warning: Users can only change the Region Code five times. Then the code will be locked at the last change.
  Under Windows 2000:
Click "Start" / "Settings" / "Control Panel"/ "System" / "Hardware" / "Device manager" / "DVD/CD-ROM drives" select your DVD drive "Advanced Setting" Select your area of Region code.

4. What is "S/PDIF" Does BTC DVD-ROM drive support it?
S/PDIF (Sony/Philips digital Interface) is the communication specification of digital signals that is built in on sound Card or M/B. It is defined by Sony & Philips and BTC DVD-ROM drives support this function.

5. How to use the "S/PDIF" function?
Under Windows 2000:
Click "Start" / "Settings" / "Control Panel" / "System" / "Hardware" / "Device manager" / "Sound, video and game controllers" Select your sound card device (Example: Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128) "Settings"/ "Output Mode" / "Digital" / "Line-Out" / "S/PDIF-Out"

6. How to change the Region Code of DVD-ROM drives?
According to the DVD-Forum, PC chip must be designed into DVD-ROM drives to record how many times a user has changed the region code. Once the limit of 5 changes is reached, the drive won't allow you to change the region code any more. Here are the steps to change the code:
Start Setting Control Panel System Device manager DVD ROM Property Advance Setting value.

7. How to change the region code of DVD-ROM drives?
For different operating system, follow the steps below to change the setting.
  Windows 2000:
My computer / DVD drive property / Hardware / Properties / Advanced setting
  Windows XP:
My computer / DVD drive property / Hardware / Properties / DVD region

8. In Windows XP, a DVD-ROM drive is recognized as a CD-ROM drive while starting up. Why?
Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP have built-in IDE drivers which automatically detect the drive as a CD-ROM drive. In Windows XP, the drive will be recognized as a DVD-ROM after running the application, such as. PowerDVD.

9. Why can't 12X or 16X DVD-ROM reach its best performance when it plays some DVD titles? It can only reach 6x or 8x speed while running Nero DVDSpeed.
DVD-ROM drives automatically detect the content of DVD discs. Depending on what the source is, the drive performs the speed that the media is. If the format of DVD is data, the speed will reach 12x or 16x. The 12X and 16X DVD-ROM drives can only reach 6x speed when the format of DVD disc is video. When testing BTC DVD-ROM drive with DVD disc of video format, it's normal to see the speed is only 6x or 8x.

10. How can I play DVD-movies? What is the hardware requirement to playback DVD-movies?
Install a software player such as Power DVD into your computer. The software decodes MPEG2 files. In such case, the minimum hardware requirement is as follows.

  • PII266MHz or above to playback MPEG-2 files with MPEG-2 video (DVD movie title)

  • Or Celeron 300A processor or higher

  • Or K6-2 processor at 300 MHz or higher

  • Sound card with SPDIF function

  • At least 32 MB RAM

  • Display card supporting DirectDraw

11. What is Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1-channels, DTS 6-channels?
You may visit Dolby's web site and DTS web site for more information.

12. How can I enjoy Dolby Digital 5.1-channels or DTS 6-channels on DVD-movies?
To enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS, a soundcard with Dolby Digital decoding or DTS decoding is needed. The card has 6 separate channels. These channels are for front-right, front-left speakers, rear surround speakers (left & right), a center speaker and a subwoofer.

13. What are "Regional codes"?
The home releases of movies in different countries area simultaneous.
To prevent some DVD-Video to be purchased before the movies are released in the country, the major motion picture studios set 6 regional codes for different countries.
There are 6 regions. Players and discs are identified by the region number superimposed on a world globe:
  1. Canada, U.S
  2. Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East, Egypt
  3. Southeast Asia and East Asia
  4. Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
  5. Eastern Europe, Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
  6. China
Regional codes apply to DVD-Video discs only, not to DVD-ROM discs containing computer software. DVD-ROM drives check for regional codes before playing movies from a DVD-Video.

According to DVD-Forum, PC2 chip must be designed into DVD-ROM drives to record how many times a user has changed the regional code. Once the limit is reached (5 changes), the drive won't allow you to change the regional code any more, it means you can only play the DVD-movie from the region that you set on your drive at the last time.

Note that BTC's DVD-ROM drives are bundled with Power DVD software to allow you to change regional codes up to 5 times. The player will be fixed at the regional code specified at the last time. Afterwards, you can only playback DVD titles of the same region-code setting or non-CSS DVD titles of all regions. It means the software player will refuse to play discs that are not allowed in that region.
Note: regional codes are entirely optional for the maker of a disc.

14. After 5 region-code changes, my DVD-ROM drive is locked for a certain region. Is there a cure for it?
Yes, you have to send the drive back to your dealer or our RMA center.
The RPC chip can be reset for you to have another 5 changes. The delivery and service charge is on your own.

15. What are the features and speeds of DVD-ROM drives?
The data transfer rate from a DVD-ROM disc at 1X speed is 1350 MB/s.
It is roughly equivalent to a 9X CD-ROM drive (1X CD-ROM drives provide a data transfer rate of 150KB/s)

16. Can a BTC DVD-ROM drive read a dual-layer disc?
Yes. It's required by the spec.

17. What are the sizes and capacities of DVD?
The physical sizes are the same as CD-ROM: 12 cm and 8 cm, both 1.2 mm thick. A DVD disc can be single-sided or double-sided. Each side can have one or two layers of data.
For reference, a CD-ROM holds about 650 megabytes, which is 0.64 gigabytes.
